This year my child will be studying AS level Biology separately. What is the difference between preparing for AS and full A Level Biology?
Dr. Anil Khare: AS Level Biology demands a specific preparation approach that differs from the full A Level in ways that consistently catch students off guard when they are not properly anticipated. The AS examination is very broad in its content, covering cell biology, biological molecules, enzymes, membrane transport, gaseous exchange, transport systems and DNA structure, and is examined in a short period of time, not allowing the time usually taken by two-year A Level students to consolidate the material. Examination technique should be developed at the same time as material is covered and not in subsequent years, as there is no second year to fine tune the technique. By doing so students arrive at the examination period with both the knowledge and the examination fluency that AS papers require simultaneously
My child understands Biology conceptually but consistently drops marks on data analysis questions. What is causing this?
Dr. Anil Khare: So, a big chunk of the marks in Biology for AS and A Level are spread out on data analysis questions and they are really different in terms of what they test as compared with conceptual biology questions for which most students prepare most carefully. A data analysis question is not primarily testing knowledge of Biology, as its main focus is on the data. It is assessing the ability to read & interpret accurate information from a graph, table or experiment; to recognize the pattern in this and to explain what this pattern represents in a biological context, as well as assessing the validity or limitations of the information presented. Students who treat the data question like a biology question tend to have low scores because they do not analyze the data presented in the question but rather recall their biology knowledge, which is incorrect and unhelpful. We train students to read data questions initially as an analytical exercise, identifying the pattern and quantifying the trend where numbers are present and linking the data explicitly to the biological mechanism it represents, before drawing on subject knowledge to explain it.
My child finds the synoptic questions at the end of A Level Biology papers particularly challenging. How do you develop synoptic thinking?
Dr. Anil Khare: Synoptic questions are the most considered questions of the exam and it is a conscious attempt of the examiner to test the real understanding of the student as they connect biological concepts across different topics rather than treating each area of the syllabus as an isolated unit of knowledge. If any student has compartmentalized each of these topics, a question that relates cellular respiration with muscle physiology, or protein synthesis with enzyme function, or ecological and evolutionary principles cannot be answered by that student. We have a clear understanding that teaching the A Level Biology syllabus as a whole is essential to developing the capacity for synoptic thinking; by building the conceptual bridges between topics as they are introduced so that by the time synoptic questions appear in past papers, the connections they require are already instinctive rather than effortfully constructed under examination pressure.
