My child did well at IGCSE but is really struggling with A Level. Is this normal?

Dr Anil Khare: This is extremely common & the students who find the transition most challenging are often those who performed most comfortably at IGCSE. A strong IGCSE result is typically built on reliable methods & solid recall. A Level Mathematics demands something fundamentally different, continuous multi-step reasoning & a much higher level of algebraic fluency beyond IGCSE level & the ability to construct arguments without scaffolding. In most cases the underlying ability is already there. What is lacking is the framework required to apply that ability at A Level standard & that is exactly what our sessions are designed to develop.

My child is targeting Engineering at a top UK university. What grade do they actually need?

Dr Anil Khare: For Engineering at Imperial College London, UCL, University of Bath or University of Warwick, an A* in Mathematics is typically set as a condition of the offer rather than a preference. The difference between an A & an A* is almost never raw ability it is far more often the result of recurring error patterns & gaps in working that have not been systematically addressed. We embed that process into every session for students aiming for high-grade targets.
